Rest in Peace, Not in Pieces.

Do not wait until you die to rest in peace, my friends, do it now. Relax. Say no when they ask you to save them for the third or hundredth time, because they still haven't learned to save themselves. They will never learn their lessons, as long as you are interfering with their opportunities to do so.

There is no glory for a hero who has eaten dirt to save another but doesn't take time to enjoy the rewards, to partake in the consumption of the fruits of ones own labours.

Rest in peace now, and walk gently. Allow yourself to be saved by your own gratitude for your own breath. Thank you, clear and strong breathing! Or, thank you, laboured breathing, for reminding me to pay attention to my own health. Let the tears flow, if need be. And thank you, gratitude, for saving me from a wandering mind full of blame and guilt.

Thank you discomfort, for reminding me to rest, and for motivating me to be creative in finding gentle ways to do so. Let the pillows support you. A small table or chair to rest your feet on. Take it in equal measures, if not more, than what you give to others. Only you know the perfect placement for the pillow that supports your back, so don't work too hard for others in hopes that they will know exactly what you need.

Get "don't be a hero" tattooed on the inside of your hand, as a cheating aid for life. "Oh, but you're so brave! You're so nice! You are the only person that knows me, that I can rely on. You are so special because you bend over backwards for me! Wow! I am so honoured and grateful to know you!" Can you eat those words for breakfast? No. But, you can look at the inside of your hand, remember to say no, and then sit down and enjoy a breakfast that you gave yourself time and space to lovingly prepare for yourself.

Because your heart wants so much to give to others, you can easily neglect yourself. The irony is, the more you neglect yourself, the more you are playing as a pawn in the selfish person's game, having your generosity and empathy used against you. When you love and care for yourself, using simple tools like compassion towards yourself, you expand yourself to become a greater conduit for love. And the outcome is that you are in even greater service to others, to the whole, than you would be by keeping yourself small.

So rest in peace. Today. While you are still awake, and able to enjoy it.
